What is now known as The Congregational Church in Chipping was built in 1838 for use as an independent non-conformist place of worship. There is a stone on the front of the building above the door which has the inscription:

PROVIDENT CHAPEL

ERECTED BY SUBSCRIPTION

MDCCCXXXVIII

Unfortunately after about 40 years the chapel went into decline and was closed in 1882 for about 18 years. It was re-opened by a group of young men from Grimshaw Street Congregational Church in Preston who spent much time cleaning and restoring it so that services could be held again, and so it became a Congregational Church.

Currently it is an active church with an average Sunday afternoon attendance at worship of between 50 and 60 which includes a number of children, many of whom meet for Sunday School at 1:30p.m. There is also a Sunday evening service which is attended by less people.

During school term time on Tuesday evenings there is Adventures for primary school children at 6p.m. and a prayer meeting.

During the Winter months there is a midweek Fellowship Meeting, usually on Thursday evenings which might take the form of a bible study or a talk by a representative of a Missionary or Christian organization or even a talk by a member of another Church – an opportunity to share fellowship and encourage one another in the faith.

The new Millennium should be a time of learning more about the Christian faith and equipping those in the church to share the good news of Jesus with those they meet.
